Patrician Brothers College Blacktown is renowned for producing top-tier rugby league players - and the new generation is ready to make its mark.
The schoolboys' juggernaut will kickstart its 2022 Peter Mulholland Cup campaign against Endeavour Sports High on Wednesday, and the game will be exclusively livestreamed by The Daily Telegraph.
The Western Sydney rugby league school is where Penrith Panthers stars Jarmoe Luai, Stephen Crichton and Sean O'Sullivan first linked up as students.
Now the nursery for NRL talent is back to show off its schoolboy stars.
Coach Noah Meares said the "NRL Schoolboys Cup is synonymous" with Patrician Brothers, after winning weight cups - including two out of the past three seasons - and the 2012 national championship.
"We have bow who come from all over who want to come to our school because they know about our history and culture and want to be a part of it," Meares said.
"They also know that coming here not only gives them an opportunity to play in the competition, but gives them a great opportunity to move into the NRL and pathways systems.
We have the most former students who are playing in the NRL, so the cup means a lot to our school and our boys, and that's why they always put their best foot forward.
"In fairness, it seems like it means more for the boys to play for their school than it does for their club or rep club some of the time"
After last year's competition was scrapped midway because of COVID-19, Patrician Brothers remain the reigning champions, after defeating Westfields by six points in the 2020 grand final.
And Meares said after two years of disrupted seasons, his side would come out fighting this year, determined to chase back-to-back championships.
"We had a very good team in 2020 and last year. Even though it was disrupted, we were again in a really good spot," Meares said.
"We had a very young team last year - a lot of them were 16 - so we've had players come back a lot more experienced and mature, which will only work in our favour."
Patrician Brother's quest for back-to-back titles won't be easy, and it begins on Wednesday against a strong Endeavour Sports High.
Meares said the side from the Shire was known to be "fit, fast and play a well structured game of footy".
"Endeavour is a very well drilled team, and their fitness tends to be the difference between them and other sides," Meares said.

Our students spoke about their chosen topics with enthusiasm and passion and they all represented the College with distinction. This week our Year 10 and 11 students attended a presentation given by Service NSW about how to obtain your drivers licence. This is the first year that Service NSW has offered such presentations and Patrician Brothers’ College, Blacktown was privileged to be the first school in our region to attend. In the career pathways space, obtaining your drivers licence is a valuable process. Some post school pathways may require young people to have their licence. Additionally, being able to drive can open up opportunities for tertiary education as well as employment options, without reliance on public transport. The presentation outlined some significant changes to the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT), the different identification documents required and the importance of bringing the right identification on the day.

Last week, a group of our Year 12 Pasifika students attended a conference on Future Student Engagement Programs at Western Sydney University. The Pasifika Achievement to Higher Education (PATHE) team hosted the event, providing students with important information and advice about their futures. They participated in a number of exciting workshops that explored educational and career pathways and helped prepare them for life beyond school.

Last week, our Year 12 students attended venues at Springwood, Mulgoa and Grose Vale for their Senior Retreats, which were all led by our talented and generous College staff. The activities involved in the Retreats encouraged students to reflect on their lives, their relationships with family and friends, where God might be leading them as they embark upon their final year of school, and how they might use their God-given talents to live their lives to the fullest. We commend our students for committing fully to the Retreat, and extend our gratitude to the staff who facilitated the program, and to families for all of the preparation and prayers that happen behind the scenes.

Today we mark Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. As we receive the ashes, we are reminded of our humanity and called to turn our hearts toward Christ, who leads us through this season of repentance and renewal. Throughout Lent, our community will embrace opportunities for compassion, generosity, and selflessness as we reflect on the example of Jesus' journey towards the events of Holy Week. Today, our students and staff enjoyed pancakes at recess for Shrove Tuesday. Traditionally, this is the day to use up rich ingredients like eggs and sugar before we enter 40 days of simplicity and fasting, commencing on Ash Wednesday and extending throughout the season of Lent. Thank you to the families and students who supported the day by purchasing pancakes, and to the Year 11 Peer Support Leaders who served the community.
